How to "calibrate an extruder" ?

It is mandatory part in order to print with a good quality: over extrusion or under extrusion can generate failures and flaws affecting the print quality. It can change from a printer to another one due to tolerance, usages, filament brand (and even from batch to batch).

Calibrate the steps

To calibrate the steps:
  • We will put two marks on the filament spaced by 100mm just before the extruder.
  • We will ask the printer to extrude 100mm of filament at a very slow speed.
  • Measure with a caliper.
  • Correct the number of steps using the formula: newSteps = oldStep * 100.0/measuredLength
  • Iterate until it is correct.
  • Save the newSteps.
